Why We Built Our Own Checkout App, register

For over two decades, our team at Ability Business had the privilege of working alongside thousands of small and mid-sized retailers across the country as they ran their businesses using QuickBooks Point of Sale. From the early 2000s onward, we weren’t just selling the software, we were consulting, training, customizing, and building add-ons to enhance and extend its functionality.

We helped businesses streamline operations, connect to QuickBooks Desktop, manage inventory, simplify checkout, and overcome the unique challenges of their industries. Over time, we became a go-to resource for all things QuickBooks POS, and many of our clients came to trust us not just as consultants, but as partners in their growth.

So, when Intuit announced the deprecation of QuickBooks POS in October 2023, we knew this wasn’t just the end of a product, it was the end of an era.

But It Was Also a Beginning.

We saw a clear need: businesses still needed a reliable, affordable, and QuickBooks Online -compatible point-of-sale checkout solution. And we knew we could fill that gap. After years of working within the framework of QuickBooks POS, we had learned what worked, what didn’t, and what could be better. That’s when we decided to build register by ability business, POS checkout app designed from the ground up to integrate with QuickBooks Online.

Why We Built register

  • To Serve Our Clients
Many of our clients had grown with us. They didn’t want to abandon their workflows or data ecosystems, and they trusted us to guide them through this transition. register was our answer, a product we could stand behind, designed to meet their evolving needs while keeping them connected to QuickBooks Online.
  • To Simplify the POS Experience
Over the years, we saw firsthand how overly complex or bloated POS systems caused frustration. Register focuses on being intuitive, fast, and user-friendly with just the features you need to run checkout, manage sales, and sync seamlessly to QuickBooks Online.
  • To Stay Rooted in QuickBooks
While the platform has evolved from Desktop to Online, our commitment to QuickBooks remains the same. register connects directly to QuickBooks Online, offering an easy, cloud-based solution for sales syncing and reporting.
  • To Future-Proof Your Business
With cloud-based flexibility, register is designed to scale with your business whether you’re operating a single-location shop and managing multiple ecommerce platforms.

Backed by Expert Support You Can Trust

In addition to one-on-one support, we’ve created a dedicated register Wiki, a growing knowledge base filled with how-to guides, setup instructions, FAQs, and best practices. It’s designed to help you find answers quickly, learn at your own pace, and get the most out of Register.

Our clients know that when they need help, they’re not left searching—they have access to real people, real answers, and real support.

A New Chapter, Same Mission

At Ability Business, our mission has always been to help retailers and service providers run better businesses by connecting technology to workflow. While QuickBooks POS may have reached the end of its lifecycle, our journey continues: this time, with a solution built entirely by us, for you.

register by ability business is more than just a POS, it’s the next evolution in our 20+ year commitment to retail success. It is a POS checkout app built by a small business for small business.

All the best,

Lisa
